This article draws upon small scale research carried out by an Assistant Head Teacher. It focuses on strategies to enable teachers to exercise learning centred leadership in secondary schools. There is a brief account of the ‘Teacher-led Development Work’ programme supported by a partnership between the University of Cambridge Faculty of Education and the local authority in Hertfordshire. This account is located within a discussion about school improvement and distributed leadership. At the centre of the article are two case studies of teachers who develop their leadership capacity through participation in the programme.

Key Words: case studies • distributed leadership • school improvement • ‘teacher-led development work’ • university/local authority partnership
